Like the rest of the Addams family, Morticia delights in the grim, the macabre, the unfortunate, the psychopathic, the murderous, the dangerous, the grotesque, the morbid, the painful, the horrific, and the supernatural in ways that are pretty much counter to typical attitudes on these topics. Most of the time this is played for laughs in nearly ever version of The Addams Family, the film being no exception. However, as this is a woman who took away a knife from her daughter for her brother, only to hand her a larger cleaver, and acts in a similar vein all the time, I am aware that this is not everyone's brand of humor and that she could be a very unsettling or possibly triggering character to tag. Please let me know if it bothers you here!

Personality; Morticia is the calm, collected, stately matriarch of the Addams Family. Unlike her husband, she is neither excitable nor talkative, spending most of her time lingering quietly until the time comes to put in a quick, cutting word. Where Gomez is emotional, thundering, maniacal, even, she is quick and rational, determined and steady. Witty, but not loquacious; clever, but understated. persevereMore practical, and more subtle than he, she is usually to be found quietly at his side, putting in a word here and there, encouraging him, comforting him, tempering him if necessary and looking out for her family.

Like the rest of her family, she enjoys the darker, morbid side of life. Her garden is filled with roses from which she cuts the flower; when telling the story of Hansel and Gretel to preschool children, she sympathizes with the witch rather than the children protagonists, painting her as the victim of the tale. It's often she who makes the most offsetting remarks about the family and their lifestyle- needing more widows and orphans- "Cyanide…Fester, as if we'd run out." She encourages her children's disturbing games of death, handing her daughter Wednesday a larger cleaver when she goes after her brother Pugsley.

However, it cannot be said that she isn't a deeply caring mother, or a loving wife to Gomez. She is technically a housewife, albeit an Addams-style one, but no less devoted for any of that. She encourages her children whenever she can, in their Addams interests, and delivers peptalks about how they will persevere when they are temporarily removed from their home. She reads to them at night, and dotes on them with a firm but loving hand, reasonably asking them to . And it can never be said that she and Gomez are not deeply, passionately in love, even at the most inappropriate of times. They are more often than not found together, even when she is just sitting quietly at his side, and often to be found kissing and romancing each other despite any possible audiences. And Morticia is deeply, deeply loyal to her family. When action is necessary, it's she who rallies herself for the benefit of her family and takes matters into her own hands, confronting those who have wronged them. Alone, if necessary, although probably with the certain knowledge that if anything were to happen to her it would spur Gomez and the rest of her family into action. She would do anything to defend and aid them. You do not mess with Morticia's family.

And she is so terribly sincere about it all. She is not, on the whole, typically sarcastic or teasing (well, just a little bit, but not as often as she is terribly honest about what she thinks and her family's off-kilter view of the world.) She is no more malicious than the rest of her family (who are, it must be noted, fairly malicious by typical standards; but they think nothing of dumping boiling liquids on carolers or burying someone who tried to swindle them alive, and they revel in the incredibly gruesome deaths of their ancestors, in psychopaths and murderers). Every offbeat, disturbing, cutting remark- she means every single last one.

Samples;
Network Sample; [There's a full vase of roses sitting next to Morticia. She's pulling them out, one by one, and methodically clipping the flower from the stem, and then replacing them in the vase, casually rearranging them as she does so.]

It's dim, it's dreary, it's dismal- it's almost truly desolate.

[She snips off another flower.]

But it lacks a certain something. [Snip. A thoughtful look, and then an arched eyebrow.] Perhaps vultures. [Another pause.] No, something bigger. An execution. Just the way to spend an evening, waiting for the blade to fall. Something depressing for the whole family. The children would love it.

[And she sighs, a little dejected, and finishes off the last flower.]
